Early Bird Shoppers Claim Black Friday Deals

Those up early enough for the start of Black Friday sales -- some as early as Midnight -- say they snagged deals during their early morning shopping.

At the same shopping center in North Dallas, Toys R Us shoppers start their Black Friday spending at 8pm on Thanksgiving while Best Buy customers must wait.

Who needs sleep when you can practically hear the sales calling from your nearby shopping mall?

That's the question tens of thousands of North Texas Black Friday shoppers are asking themselves, with the resounding answer of "Not me!"

"I mean, I ain't got nothing else to do.  I got four children and they said, 'Mom, it's the Black Friday.'  Mom is here!" said Tish Alexander of Fort Worth, who spent all night at the North East Mall in Hurst.

The North East Mall, like many other stores and shopping centers in the Metroplex, opened its doors at midnight.  And like a retail "Field of Dreams" --  if you open it, shoppers will come.

"The mall's not the first stop," said Gerald Jordan of Colleyville, his two kids in tow.  "[We] started with breakfast and it's progressively... we went from the mall to Kohl's to a lot of places."

Bargain hunting is the primary reason people told NBC 5 they came out in the middle of the night.

"Scarf, pants, sweater - everything, the entire outfit, for under $35!" one shopper exclaimed.  She, like so many others, has turned the overnight ritual into a holiday tradition -- zipping from store to store with friends and shopping bags in tow.

Over at the Galleria in Dallas, crowds were picking up Friday evening, looking even busier than Friday afternoon. Three of the parking garages were at capacity with the rest of the spaces at 95-percent capacity around 5 p.m.

The constant flow of people coming in and out are helping customers find places to park.

People took advantage of items discounted 60 to 70-percent off in some stores.  Many retailers are also offering gift cards for customers who spend a certain amount in their stores.

Customers that spoke with NBC 5 said they're pretty happy with the bargains.

"A lot of great deals," says shopper Sean Jones of Dallas.  "I'm probably spending a little less per item (than last year) but maybe spending near the same amount because I'm buying more."

Small business owners are hoping you don't forget the little guy this weekend.

After shoppers flock to the mall and large retail chains on Black Friday, many are hoping customers participate in "Small Business Saturday."

"In order to compete with the big boys," said Suzanne Roberts, who owns her own store, Suzanne Roberts Inc., in Snider Plaza in University Park.

Roberts said she can't offer the big discounts like major stores, but to lure customers into the store, she is offering something.

"Our special is nothing like theirs. At 20% off, that's a big special for us," Roberts said.

Vickie Brown, who owns Love Tennis, also in Snider Plaza, is doing the same thing.

"Right now, we are having a sale. We moved it up just about three weeks. We usually do it just before Christmas, but we thought for Small Business Saturday we were going to offer 75-percent off of past seasons of Stella McCartney and Adidas is 30-percent off," Brown said.

Both women said it's important for shoppers to remember small businesses in order to support the local economy.

They also point out customers won't have to deal with the hassle of long lines and crowded aisles.

"It's so intimate with the customer and we have our clientele base where we get to know the customers one-on-one. So it's not just a come in and shop. We really get to know you," Brown said.

Fort Worth Displays Its Parade of Lights

Thousands prepare to turn the lights on in Downtown Fort Worth.

Sundance Square has the Christmas Spirit.

On Friday, Sundance Square hosted the Fort Worth Parade of Lights. Thousands of people crowded the streets to get a look at more than 100 floats decorated with lights.

But the big draw was a big tree. Santa Claus came into town to help light up a 55-foot blue spruce tree from Michigan decorated with ornaments.

Based on reaction from kids in the crowd, the event was a hit.

"We get to see the tree light up, and we get to see, we get to see Santa!" said an excited Kaila Delane of Irving. "It's my first time, but I kind of like it. It's like New York."

Hundreds of people waited in line to pose for a picture with Santa and the tree. Pictures are $7 and benefit charity.

A massive crash along Interstate 10 near Beaumont has killed two people and injured up to 120 others.

Interstate 10 near Beaumont re-opened Thursday evening, hours after a massive crash involving as many as 100 vehicles left two people dead and up to 120 injured. 

KPRC-TV in Houston reported two people from Pearland, near Houston were killed in the pile-up.  Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Stephanie Davis said those victims were in an SUV, but declined to provide details.

The crash took place in extremely dense fog shortly before 9 a.m. along a two-mile stretch of road between Taylor's Bayou and Hampshire Road, NBC News reported. 

Earlier reports suggested that between 50 and 150 vehicles may have been involved in the crash, but those estimates have been updated to 100. 

Initially dozens of people were also reported injured, now that number has grown to as many as 120 with 51 of those injuries requiring hospitalization -- eight of the people are considered critical.

I-10 was closed in both directions west of Beaumont near Hampshire Road.  Shortly after noon, the westbound lanes reopened to traffic.  The eastbound lanes re-opened at 5 p.m.

Man Gunned Down During Thanksgiving Visit

A Thanksgiving Day visit turned tragic in Arlington.

Police responded to a shooting at a residence in the Countrywood Apartments in the 500-block of Ridings Place Thursday afternoon.

Police told NBC DFW the victim came over to visit his ex-girlfriend and her children but ended up getting into an argument with the mother's new boyfriend.

 The man left the residence and the arguing continued outside where the woman's new boyfriend shot the man multiple times.

The victim died at the scene.

The armed man left after the shooting, but later returned and was arrested by police.

The names of the victim and gunman have not yet been released by police.

For McKinney business owner Mark Cobb, it was a personal connection to the family of Alicia Moore that prompted him to action.

"Alicia Moore's Aunt Jessica works for me," said Cobb, owner of Kids R Kids. "I just felt the need to help out and do something."

Earlier this month, 16-year-old Moore was reported missing, last seen getting off the school bus near her Greenville home.

Moore's body was later discovered in a trunk on the side of the highway in rural Van Zandt County. Police are still investigating, but are remaining tight lipped.

"It is frustrating, that it's been two or three weeks and we haven't heard anything," said Cobb.

Over the past few weeks, Cobb has led a fundraising campaign, starting both a reward fund for information in Moore's death and a relief fund to help the teen's family.

By Wednesday afternoon, thanks to Cobb's own contribution, money given by his Kids R Kids parents and staff, and donations by his former boss at Greenville Chrysler and another Plano businessman, the reward fund had grown to $25,000.

"[It's] is a lot of money and it might get that right person to come forward and say what they saw," he said.

Cobb added the relief fund contains about $4,000.

The group of business owners has also rallied support for two billboards bearing Moore's picture and a plea for information, which will go up after Thanksgiving.

One will sit on Highway 380 in McKinney and the other outside of Greenville.

Cobb says the cost of the billboard rental was also donated.

Balch Springs Man Beaten in His Home

A Balch Springs man was severely beaten on Monday morning in his house.

Roberto Benevides said he heard the doorbell just before 6 a.m. and thought it was his son, who had just left for work. Instead, it was a man he didn't recognize, asking for someone named "Enrique."

"He was looking for an Enrique at this address and I said, 'I don't know any Enrique,'" he said.

But before the 63-year-old could close the door, the man pushed it open and rushed in -- along with two other men who were hiding out of sight.

"I tried to block my face, but he started hitting me, but then the other two came in, also hitting me in the face and the head," Benevides said.

The men knocked Benevides down, but not before breaking his nose and bruising five of his ribs. Benevides, a retired border patrol officer, said he tried to fight one of the men off until another man came over and threatened him.

"That's when I was trying to wrestle with the guy that was holding me down, when he told the other two, 'One of you help me. This viejo is trying to get up,'" Benevides said. "And that's when the guy
said, 'You try to get up and look at our face or what? You do that, and I'll pop you.'"

The threat convinced Benevides to stay on the floor.

The men took a 60-inch TV but never went upstairs, where Benevides' wife, son and two other family members were resting. Benevides said he is grateful that the men didn't decide to go upstairs.

"The material items, they can be replaced," he said. "But threatening my family or taking my son with them or my wife with them when they left -- there was no way I could stop them."

Balch Springs police released a composite sketch of the man who rang the doorbell. He's described as a young Hispanic man who is about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 150 to 160 pounds with light skin and light brown hair. Benevides said the man spoke Spanish.

Anyone who may have seen the men in the area are asked to call Balch Springs police and ask for Detective Bird at 972-557-6014.

Wireless Alerts to Reach More in DFW

AT&T Inc. now says it is ready to deliver emergency alerts to its smartphone subscribers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, months after an NBC 5 investigation revealed that the Dallas-based company was not ready to implement the new government-sponsored system in its hometown market.

"I am happy to report that, since your last report, we have completed our wireless emergency alert deployment in the Dallas area and are working aggressively to complete other areas as quickly as possible," AT&T spokeswoman Alejandra Arango said.

Besides the DFW metropolitan area, AT&T is currently ready to deliver emergency alerts in just three other major cities -- New York, Washington, D.C., and Portland, Ore.

The NBC 5 Investigates team started looking into the Wireless Emergency Alert System after seeing announcements from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service this spring that claimed the system was ready to go nationwide.

The alert system is designed to send urgent weather warnings, Amber Alerts and presidential emergency alerts to smartphone users, using technology similar to text messages.

Under the original plan laid out by Congress, wireless carriers who agreed to take part in the program were supposed to have their end of the program up and running in April.

But this summer, NBC 5 Investigates found that AT&T was not able to deliver those alerts to its smartphone customers in the DFW area.

In June, AT&T told NBC 5 Investigates in a statement that: "We're not currently ready in Dallas, but we're working aggressively to get there."

FEMA, one of the agencies in charge of the system, told NBC 5 Investigates in June that it was ready to deliver on its part.

"The news release said that the FEMA portion of the system was established and running nationwide, and that's not a misstatement -- that's correct," Damon Penn, FEMA assistant administrator of national continuity programs, said in June. "Again, what part the carriers play and where the carriers are at in the process really depends on the carriers."

Wireless carriers Sprint Nextel Corp., Verizon Communications Inc. and T-Mobile USA Inc. told NBC 5 Investigates that they were ready to deliver alerts nationwide this summer to any smartphone capable of receiving them

Rep. Joe Barton, who was involved in creating the alert system, told NBC 5 Investigates that wireless companies would work quickly to close any gaps in coverage because customers would demand it.

"That's what will ultimately drive 100 percent implementation, is someone will say, 'Verizon has it all,' or, 'Sprint has it all,'" he said.

Smartphone users with phones capable of receiving WEA alerts whose wireless company participates in the program do not need to sign up for the alerts. The system works automatically; phone will receive an alert if it's turned on and is located in any city where an alert is issued.

AT&T offers 11 smartphones that can receive WEA alerts. The iPhone currently is not one of them. However, Sprint and Verizon say they can deliver alerts to their iPhone subscribers.

Smartphone customers can check with their wireless carrier for more information about service area coverage and whether their phone is WEA-ready.
